Lock Installation: How To Install A Deadbolt

When it comes to choosing lock installation, there’s no doubt that a deadbolt can provide better protection than a regular spring-loaded lock.

Deadbolt locks require a key on either side of the door to unlock it, so intruders who break a window to unlock your door will be out of luck.

However, deadbolts can be a little trickier to install, which is why we created this step-by-step guide.

How To Install A Deadbolt Step By Step

Most deadbolt manufacturers will include a template that can help you align your lock with the door frame. You’ll want to position your deadbolt lock about six inches above the door handle.

Using the template, mark your reference points and use a hole saw to cut a hole for the deadbolt lock. Finish the hole on the other side of the door to smooth the hole and reduce splinters

Next, we recommend using a ⅞” spade drill bit to drill the hole on the edge of the door. Drill all the way through until your drill bit comes through the hole you drilled for the deadbolt.

Fit the bolt into the hole and trace around the faceplate. You’ll need to mortise the faceplate area using a wood chisel to make it flush with the door. Continue mortising the area until the faceplate fits properly.

Secure the bolt to the door with screws, and you’re almost done.

Next, you’ll need to dry-fit the cylinder and thumb-turn plate. Notice how the pieces fit together. Focus on the exterior side first, then the interior side. Align the screw holes with the lock’s mounting holes and secure them with screws.

Last step: mark the end of the deadbolt lock with paint or lipstick, close the door, and turn the lock several times to mark where the strike plate needs to be installed.

Use the ⅞” spade drill bit to create two overlapping holes in the door frame for the deadbolt. Mortise the area like before so the strike plate will be flush with the door, then secure it with screws.
